TANDEM presentation at the World TB Day Symposium in Berlin

Prof. Hazel Dockrell, TANDEM coordinator, presented the TANDEM project and its objectives to a broad audience in Berlin at the 9th Scientific Symposium that was organized on the occasion of World Tuberculosis Day 2015 by the TuBerculosis Vaccine Initiative (TBVI) together with the Koch-Mechnikov Forum. The event focused on current developments in vaccine research, preventive and public health measures in TB control and overall strategies to efficiently fight the disease.

In her talk entitled “The challenge of tuberculosis and diabetes mellitus comorbidity”, Prof. Dockrell discussed the fact that Diabetes can increase the risk of tuberculosis 3-fold, and that many TB patients have diabetes. She also explained the impact of diabetes on tuberculosis infection and presented the work of the TANDEM project in this context. She concluded her presentation expressing the hope that the ongoing studies will help identify the most effective ways of bidirectional screening, of managing TB-DM patients and bring greater insights into the mechanisms underlying the interactions of the two diseases.
