The University Medical Center Groningen is the largest hospitals in the Netherlands and the largest employer in Northern Netherlands. Cisca Wijmenga is project leader of the Genome of the Netherlands Project (GoNL) and a validation of biomarkers project within the Top Institute Food and Nutrition. She is a world leader in complex genetics and has contributed to the identification of genes for type 2 diabetes, celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis and other immune-related disease. She is a member of the T1DGC (Type 1 Diabetes Genetics Consortium), the DIAGRAM (Diabetes Genetics Replication And Meta-analysis Consortium), IBDGC (NIDDK Inflammatory Bowel Disease Genetics Consortium), ImmunoChip, and FOCiS (Federation of Clinical Immunology Societies) consortium and numerous scientific societies and sits on many NWO (Dutch Research Council) committees. She has published more than 300 peer reviewed publications and reviews on genetics of complex diseases and received several awards including a Fogarty Fellowship, a prestigious Fullbright scholarship, a VICI award from the Dutch Research Council and more recently an ERC advanced grant. In 2012 she became member of the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences in the Netherlands. Vinod Kumar Magadi Gopalaiah is a postdoctoral researcher working in her group and an expert in identifying human susceptibility genes for infectious diseases by genome-wide approaches. He recently published a study using a functional genomics approach to identify the type I interferon pathway as central for host defense against Candida albicans.
