Stellenbosch University Immunology Research Group (SUN-IRG) has extensive experience in biomarker research. The faculty is linked to Tygerberg Academic Hospital, a 1,400 bed hospital, which provides secondary and tertiary health care to two million people from the Western Cape in South Africa and serves as teaching platform and research base for the University of Stellenbosch. Our research focuses on the immunology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection and in particular host biomarkers.
Gerhard Walzl is a clinician-scientist with a sub-specialization in pulmonology and a PhD in immunology. He is the principal investigator of the SUN-IRG and member of the steering committee of GC6-74 and a work package leader for the TB/HIV co-infection arm of this study.
