Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology
MPIIB, one of 80 institutes of the Max Planck Society (MPG), is among Europe's centers of excellence committed to biological research in the field of infectious diseases. Its Department of Immunology uses multi-disciplinary approaches to infection biology, comprising concepts and methodologies of molecular genetics, immunology, cell biology, molecular epidemiology, imaging, clinical research, computational biology and metabolomics. It aims at better understanding the host response to infection with Mtb with focus on phagocytes as effector cells or habitat for Mtb, as well as on functional characterization of cells, molecules and mediators in innate and acquired immunity.
Stefan H.E. Kaufmann, Biologist, scientific member of the Max Planck Society, Founding Director of the MPIIB, Professor at the Charité Berlin and Dr. h.c. (U Marseille). Over 600 peer reviewed publications and reviews on immunology and infection. Member of the German Academy of Scientists ''Leopoldina'', Berlin Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, and of numerous scientific societies and committees. Numerous awards. One of the most cited immunologists in 1981-1999.
